The Alaska State Chamber of Commerce Announces Daniel H. Cuddy as Outstanding Alaskan of the Year

The Alaska State Chamber of Commerce named the Greater Wasilla Chamber of Commerce Alaska's Chamber of the Year at their 47th Annual Convention and Trade Show in Anchorage. The Alaska Chamber of the Year award is bestowed upon an Alaskan chamber for consistent community involvement and an excellent business reputation. The Greater Wasilla Chamber of Commerce exceeds in both!

The Greater Wasilla Chamber of Commerce not only works to develop the city of Wasilla, but they have initiated the formation of the "Valley Committee of Chambers" with Palmer, Big Lake, Houston, Willow and Eagle River/Chugiak. The Chamber hosts political forums for the City Council, Mat-Su Borough and State elected officials to assist in keeping the community informed. If that were not enough, the Chamber volunteers countless hours to charity. The Greater Wasilla Chamber of Commerce is truly dedicated to its community.

In the past two years the Greater Wasilla Chamber has developed a state of the art data base and web site. Their new web site offers a free job link for employers to post open positions to the public. They use a web cam to allow tourists to view the local activities, even donating one to the Iron Dog race so viewers could watch live coverage from Nome.

Last summer the "Community Enhancement Committee" under the leadership of their president, board members, executive director and community members. This committee devotes hours to the beautification of the community, parks, recreation areas and road development. This committee has also focused on the economic development and the pursuit of a Downtown Development Corporation to further define their core business community. They are striving to produce a pedestrian-friendly downtown along side the Parks Highway.

To support all of their amazing work, they host three annual fundraising events. The "Iditarod Days Festival" which celebrates the race and official state sport. This year they raised $12,000 with their efforts! They also host the "Mat-Su King Salmon Derby." The Derby draws focus to the wonderful fishing available in the Valley and joins locals and tourists alike. This year they even added a $10,000 cash prize to the winner. Last, but certainly not least is the "Murder Mystery Train" held each October. They work very closely with the Alaska Railroad Corporation to provide a fun and exciting event for the whole community.

The Greater Wasilla Chamber has worked very hard to make sure their fundraisers not only raise money, but bring families and the community together.

Their most impressive accomplishment of this past year has to be the formation of the Mat-Su Economic Enterprise. Many Chamber representatives attended an economic development seminar to learn how to empower and provide the tools for solid business growth and development with local entrepreneurs. Within one month they had raised $14,000 to facilitate a workshop with the Dr. Ernesto Sirolli of the Economic Enterprise Facilitation and Sirolli Institute. This approach toward economic development is "out of the box" and the Greater Wasilla Chamber is leading the Mat-Su as the first community in Alaska to adopt Enterprise Facilitation.

The Alaska State Chamber of Commerce commends the Greater Wasilla Chamber of Commerce for making great strides in development, planning activities that bring the community together and striving to improve quality of life in the Mat-Su and across the State of Alaska. For these reasons, the Alaska State Chamber is honored to award the Greater Wasilla Chamber of Commerce as the 2006 Chamber of the Year.
