Size: Alaska is the largest state in the country. It is more then twice the size of Texas. Alaska is 586,412 square miles, or about 365,000,000 acres.
Coastline: Alaska, including islands has 6,640 miles of coastline.
Lakes & Rivers: Alaska has over 3 million lakes. Lake Iliamna which is over 1000 square miles is the largest lake. There are more then 3000 rivers in Alaska. The third longest river in the US is the Yukon River, which is 2,298 miles long, 1, 875 miles crosses Alaska.
Mountains: 17 of the tallest peaks in the United States are in Alaska. Mt. McKinley, Alaska's most famous mountain is in the Alaska Range. It's highest peak is 20,320 feet, making Mt. McKinley the tallest mountain in North America.
Glaciers: Glaciers cover about 5% of Alaska or 29,000 square miles. There may be upward of 100,000 glaciers in Alaska ranging in all sizes and shapes. The Largest Glacier is the Malaspina which covers 850 square miles.
Islands: There are 1,800 named islands in Alaska. The largest island is Kodiak which covers about 3,588 square miles and is home to the famous Kodiak Brown Bear.
Volcanoes: Volcanic mountains that surround the Pacific Ocean are commonly called the "Ring of Fire". This includes volcanoes on the Aleutian Islands, the Alaska Peninsula and the Wrangell Mountains. Alaska has more the 70 active Volcanoes. Recent eruptions from Mount Redoubt (1989) and Mount Spurr (1990), halted air traffic out of Anchorage for days.
Earthquakes: The strongest earthquake on record in North America occurred in Alaska. On Good Friday, March 27, 1964, a magnitude 9.2 on today's Richter scale earthquake struck Alaska at 5:39 pm and lasted about 3 minutes. The earthquake and resulting tsunamis took the lives of 131 persons and caused over $300 million dollars in damage and destruction. Follow the link for more information on the 1964 earthquake. Alaska averages about 1000 earthquakes a year that measure at least 3.0 on the Richter scale.
