Student Guide :: State FAQ
Q: Is it really cold in Alaska?
A: Winters in Alaska can be on the chilly side, but our summers make up for cold winters. For more information on Alaska's weather and climate, click here.
Q: Do you live in igloos?
A: The igloo that most people are familiar with are made of ice blocks but were primarily built quickly to use as shelter. Most Alaskan Natives lived in Quonset shaped homes made with whale bones and sod. Igloos and sod homes are a rare sight now.
Q: Is it true that it is dark / light for 24 hours in the winter/summer?
A: Where you're at in Alaska can impact the amount of light and darkness throughout the year. In Barrow, on Alaska's northernmost coast, the sun sets on November 18th and will not rise again until January 24. During the same time Juneau, in the Southeast panhandle, gets an average of 6 hours of daylight per day. The opposite can be said of summer. In Barrow, the sun does not set from May 10th to August 2 while Juneau will get about16-18 hours of daylight per day.

A: No, Juneau can only be reached by air or boat. You can take the Alaska Marine Highway (AKA the Alaska Ferry) from Washington to Juneau, or drive to Haines/Skagway and then board the ferry.

A: A little known fact about Southeast Alaska is that it is a rain forest. Precipitation in Ketchikan can average about 55 inches during the summer months (May - September).
